Panasonic 38kHz IR detector.
These very nice 38khz IR detector are often used for TV remote control. The sensors are often hacked into an object detector when teamed up with a suitable IR LED, providing a reflective range of up to 3 feet.
These sensors provide a very clean signal and won't even saturate in sunlight.
